Inglorious Basterds: Review

First of all, it was not my choice to watch this movie on a bright sunday afternoon given the fact that Bangalore is sunny and warm after many rainy,messy and boring days. However i was sitting in a packed multiplex to watch the ‘Inglourious Basterds’ starring Brad Pitt as one of the Basterd’s.

Inglorious Basterds opens with the phrase, “Once Upon a Time… in Nazi-Occupied France.” reminded me about the history lessons which i had read in school and the numerous documentaries aired on History channel. (PS:I was not prepared to watch this movie).

The war hit France and Germany look dull and scary. This movie doesn’t ask for any sympathy,apology nor any forgiveness. It has to be just experienced. Appreciate 4 different languages in the movie. For crisp dialogues, timely comedy and enough violence but could have been shorter in duration.

Plot is during World War II a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are chosen specifically to spread fear by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish woman who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers. Their plan is to infiltrate as members of an Italian film-making crew with explosives beneath their tuxedos. But this women has her own plot to burn down the entire cinema using highly flammable film reels. In one line, It’s about Jewish commandos bringing the World War II to an abrupt end by targeting the German high command. Although the movie and the history books don’t go hand in hand, Quentin Tarantino’s take would be prefered ?

There were some of them who clapped at the end, shows how involved they were and their appreciation of wonderful film making. I would say go and watch the Basterd’s !

Celebrating 25 years of my life!

Having completed 25 years of my life,here is a brief look at who am I ? As we grow,our Identity changes and we readily accept those and mould ourselves into it and move on. From a daughter,to a sister and an aunt, a student,to a software engg by profession..

I should say that i did celebrate my birthday all these years. It was a day to look upto, buy new clothes, lots of sms’s wishes, emails, cards, flowers, gifts,meeting friends,cut the cake and the cream would all over the face,watching a movie,lunching with them with loads of laughter,lots of confusions…Woah! I thought i lived life all these years. This year nothing of this happened, which is something different from all these years.

We don’t get to choose our relatives; i choose some wonderful friends. From school to college,made more friends than colleagues at work. But today i did not get to me any of my close friends, didnt talk to nicest of my friends,did not get to see my best friend..as life moves on people have different commitments in life.. i suddenly felt the emptiness today,where are all those people today ? Was i so busy running the race of my life that i did not notice tha my friends are not coming along with me or did my friends change the track

First 25 years, my life has been planned,steady,systematic and rather slow. I have no regrets, accepted life as a gift and lived it. Its time to plan for the next set of years to come, which i want to be adventurous and fast. Have lived a life in already defined terms, would like to define new terms from now and then live by them!

I think i am stuck at something called a ‘quater life crisis’ ! ?

Making of akki rotti!

My weekends are a lot more different and adventurous after i moved out of Bangalore,although i had some wonderful time before i left. :)

If i am not traveling on a  weekend, if i don’t have to work(yes i do work over the weekends sometimes),if i cant settle down watching a movie, i decide to cook! So today was that D-day where i decided to make one of my favorite akki rotti – as sunday brunch.

Akki rotti is a karnataka speciality. Akki means rice in kannada. Rice flour is used to make rottis. One can make so many different kinds of akki rottis. Most common one is rice flour mixed with coconut, cumin seeds and salt (called plain rotti). Other one is masala rotti made using carrot, onion, coriander leaves, Cilantro leaves, chillies, cumin seeds. One can also add methi leaves, dill leaves depending on your choice.

Ingredients required:

* Rice flour                1 cups (makes 2 rottis)
* Onions                    1 small finely chopped
* Carrot                     1 grated
* Cilantro leaves      handful finely chopped
* Green chilli            1 finely chopped
* Cumin seeds        1 tsp ( optional )
* Oil                            1tsp
* Salt                          to taste
* Water                     1/2 cup or according to required consistency

Now mix the all this ingrediets together and make the dough.  One can use the wax paper to make these rottis, but if you don’t have them you can directly make in on the tava. Take the mixture and pat it evenly on the tava. Make few holes for the rotti and then put the oil. Keep it on medium heat and cover the rotti. After a minute,just turn the rotti once for half a minute and that’s it!  All ready to eat!

The side dish for this rotti varies from pudina chutney,chutnipudi(with curd),Pickle etc. I had tomato/onion gojju and pudina chutney :-)

Ending the post on this note, ‘Anybody who believes that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,flunked biology’!

Cheers!!

Yanni’s music concert – Mesmerizing indeed!

When i first saw a tweet from Yanni Voices on Twitter about the Music Concert at Sprint Center in Kansas City scheduled for 9th June 2009, i was overwhelmed.I replied to the tweet and surprisingly i was one of those lucky people to get free tickets for the musical night.  I was told to collect the tickets at the venue on the day of the concert.

The show was scheduled from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. Reached the venue 15 mins prior and collected the tickets. Passed through the security checking – It had been close to 5 months since someone checked me and my belongings like that. usually any multiplex and shopping mall you visit in India you have to go through the security! :)

The Sprint Center is in the downtown of Kansas city. This indoor auditorium hosts most of the music concerts, baseball games, basket ball games and any other significant event in Kansas city. Was lucky enough to get the tickets pretty close to the stage. The seats were on the left hand side of the stage and on the 9th row, pretty close to Yanni! :)

The auditorium was packed with not-so-young-not-so-old- but very energetic crowd. The stage was all set for Yanni’s entry, all of us were waiting.. And there he enters the stage, all the 6 focusing lights on him from different corners of the auditorium, my eyes clicked pictures and saved!

Yanni is a gifted music man who is not more than 5.3″ may be ( its my guess). Dressed in all black and short hair he  looked much younger than his age. (mostly people remember his long hairstyle which he carried for many years). His troupe for this concert has 4 multi-talented singers/dancers.  Yanni can play with both his hands simultaneously on 2 different piano’s – now that’s something amazing! This musical evening was a fusion of melodious Violin, rock and roll drums, toughest musical instrument – the Harp, a Keyboard, my favorite Guitar, and a saxophone too!

The show began with a fusion of all these, the crowd was just warming up..next came a brilliant Spanish song – although i can’t follow Spanish the music was superb. The next was my favorite one, This was specially composed by Yanni during his concert at Agra, New Delhi during his India Visit. He had dedicated this song to Shajahan and Mumatz Mahal and the song is titled ‘Change’. During the concert here in Kansas, he mentioned that he dedicated this song to all the Indians!. This was followed his all time greatest music, ‘the reflections of passion’- simply wow!. The audience gave a standing ovation this song. There was a 15 minute break and the show continued with some new music. The last 2 songs were the  most enjoyed by the audience since many of them were dancing and just got carried away by the music. It finally ended at 11:00 PM. Yanni introduced all his troupe members and thanked the crowd for the support. It was the end of a magical music night by Yanni.

Photography and videography was stricly prohibited during the concert! but i carried the music and memories of the evening with me back home and forever.

Are you directionally challenged?

How many times have you found the address correctly, without getting lost?
How many times did you had to call your family / friend to find out where on this earth are they staying?
There are some people who are so bad with directions; they couldn’t find their way out of a paper bag. You give them directions, tell them precisely how to get somewhere, and invariably they will get lost.

One of the solutions is using Global Positioning System (GPS) in some countries, but for countries where GPS does not work what do we do? Like for example in India, we have a unique GPS which is ‘Get People’s Suggestions’. :-)

Some of the typical conversations with ‘Get People’s Suggestions’ type GPS are listed here…

Hello – excuse me; do you where this address comes? People with sense of humor would say, this address will not come anywhere! And you have to go and find it! :-)
Other person might say, Well… i’m relatively new here, you may want to try taking the first right and then 3rd left and so on… He is trying to help but for sure you will get lost.
Third person will say, Ahha this one… I had been here last week, but now you can’t reach this place from where you are now, since there are lot of one-way and two-way’s concept… Dang!

Not to worry, our Twitter too, is directionally challenged sometimes and here is the proof.

To Mom – with Love.

As i recollect my thoughts, the first word which I learnt and spoke was ‘Amma!’, although I cannot remember the smile on her face when I would have first called her ‘Amma’, I am sure my mother was full of joy.

I want to thank my Mom for being there with me as a friend when I needed one, as a mentor when I needed support, as a guide when I lost track, as a cook when I wanted to eat my favorite food! And for all the unconditional love throughout!I remember asking my mom, ‘How old were you when I was born?’ my mother replied, ‘25.’ ‘Now… that’s a lot of time we missed spending together.’! :-)

On this occasion of mother’s day, I dedicate this post to you and wish you a very beautiful and a healthy life ahead.

Thank you for bringing me into this world Mom, I love you!

How well are we connected? In a day I communicate and work with people from five different time zones! The day begins when I reach office at 8:30 AM CST. Kinda amazes me sometimes that the day is already ended for people in India, half way through the day for folks in London, Brunch time for fellas in Brazil!, While New Yorkers and east coast of USA are just an hour ahead of me, the bay area – Silicon valleyers would be just waking up since they are 2 hours behind me!
WorldMap

My mind tunes itself to suit these different time zones and helps me say good morning, afternoon and night to folks in respective countries. Human mind is one of the God’s best creations!
